Our Pledge to the Blue Planet
Good morning, teachers and fellow students. Have you ever looked up at the sky and noticed it isn’t as blue as it used to be in childhood photos? Have you ever felt a sting in your throat after a day outside? These are not mere imaginations, but silent alarms from our ailing Earth. Today, I stand here to talk about a commitment we must all make: the commitment to environmental protection.
We often hear that ‘The Earth does not belong to us; we belong to the Earth.’ This ancient wisdom rings truer now than ever. Environmental degradation is not a distant problem featured in documentaries; it’s the plastic bottle floating in our local river, the exhaust fumes we inhale on our way to school, and the endangered species whose habitats shrink daily. We are at a crossroads where indifference is a luxury we can no longer afford.
So, what can we, as middle school students, do? Action starts with awareness, and awareness blossoms into habit. First, we can become ambassadors of the ‘3 Rs’: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Bring a reusable water bottle, say no to single-use plastic bags, and sort our waste conscientiously. Second, we can conserve precious resources. Turning off the tap while brushing our teeth, switching off lights when leaving a room, and choosing to walk or bike for short trips are small deeds with colossal collective impact. Finally, we must be vocal. Share knowledge with family and friends, participate in tree-planting activities, and support eco-friendly initiatives.
Mahatma Gandhi once said,
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Protecting our environment is not just a duty; it is an act of love for our home and a gift to future generations. It’s about ensuring that the blue of the sky, the green of the forests, and the clarity of the waters are not just memories in old pictures but living realities for all. Let’s not wait for tomorrow. Let our pledge begin today, with every conscious choice we make.
- Pledge /pledʒ/ (n./v.)
- Inhale /ɪnˈheɪl/ (v.) 吸入
- Degradation /ˌdeɡrəˈdeɪʃn/ (n.)
- Conscientiously /ˌkɒnʃiˈenʃəsli/ (adv.)
- Colossal /kəˈlɒsl/ (adj.)
- “Environmental degradation is not a distant problem… it’s the plastic bottle… the exhaust fumes… and the endangered species…”
- “Turning off the tap…, switching off lights…, and choosing to walk… are small deeds with colossal collective impact.”
