The Small Act of Courage

The sun was blazing on the school track field. It was PE class, and Mr. Chen announced we would be practicing the high jump. My heart sank. I had always been scared of the bar, afraid of tripping and falling in front of everyone.

One by one, my classmates ran and leaped. Some cleared it gracefully, others knocked the bar down. My turn was getting closer. My palms were sweaty, and my legs felt weak. I could hear my own heart pounding like a drum.

“Ming, you’re next!” Mr. Chen called. I took a deep breath and stood at the starting point. I looked at the bar. It seemed so high, like a wall I could never overcome. Just as I was about to back out, my best friend, Li, who had just finished his jump, whispered, “You can do it! Just run fast and jump. Don’t look down.” His words were simple, but they felt like a gentle push.

I gathered all my strength, started running, focused on the mat beyond the bar instead of the bar itself. At the last second, I pushed off the ground with all my might. For a moment, I was flying. Then I landed safely on the soft mat. I looked up. The bar was still shaking, but it hadn’t fallen!

At that moment, I realized courage wasn’t about being fearless. It was about feeling the fear, listening to the encouraging voices around you, and taking that jump anyway.

From that day on, I learned to face other small fears, one at a time. That single jump taught me that the biggest obstacles are often the ones we build in our own minds.
