Standing at the crossroads of university major selection, the voices around me swirled into a cacophony of well-meaning advice. My parents envisioned me in a prestigious economics program, promising stability. My teachers lauded my potential in science. Yet, deep within, a quiet but persistent voice whispered a different path—the path of history, a field deemed ‘impractical’ by many.

I found myself lingering in the hushed aisles of the history section in our school library. There, I was not just a student facing a choice, but a traveler standing before Robert Frost’s proverbial “two roads diverged in a wood.” The pressure to conform was immense, a weight on my shoulders. As Emerson wrote, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” My room became my sanctuary of deliberation. One evening, I penned two lists. One cataloged the logical benefits of the expected routes: high salary, societal approval. The other, however, was a simple description of what ignited my curiosity—the stories of past civilizations, the lessons etched in time, the thrill of connecting disparate facts into a coherent narrative. The latter list, though shorter, burned brighter.

The decision, when it finally crystallized, felt less like a leap of faith and more like a homecoming. I chose the road less traveled by, the one leading to the history department. The initial reaction was a predictable mix of confusion and concern. Yet, as I immersed myself in ancient texts and lively debates with professors who shared my passion, I discovered a profound sense of purpose. This path demanded not the following of a pre-drawn map, but the courage to sketch my own. Steve Jobs once urged graduates to “stay hungry, stay foolish.” My hunger was for understanding the human story; my ‘foolishness’ was the belief that this understanding held intrinsic value. The road I chose is mine, carved by curiosity and paved with the conviction that the most rewarding destinations are often found not on the crowded highway, but on the path one has the courage to walk alone.
