The Weight of a Bicycle

The summer I turned fourteen, my father presented me with a sleek, silver bicycle. It stood proudly against the garage wall, promising freedom and adventure. Yet, when I first gripped its handlebars, a cold, familiar dread coiled in my stomach—the fear of falling, of scraping my knees, of looking foolish in front of the neighbors. My hands trembled slightly.

“It’s okay to be scared,” my father said, placing a steadying hand on the seat. “Courage isn’t about not having fear. It’s about feeling the pedals shake beneath your feet and pushing them forward anyway.” His words hung in the humid air, more eloquent than any textbook definition.

With his support, I mounted the bike. The initial wobble was terrifying; every gust of wind felt like a threat. I focused on the path ahead, not the trembling in my legs. One push, then another. The fear was a loud passenger, but my will to move was the driver. Slowly, the wobbles subsided. Balance, that elusive state, began to feel less like magic and more like a choice.
